Who is this guide for?
Today’s 101 post is for people NOT going for historically accurate (HA) costuming, but rather wanting to mimic the look and silhouette of the time on a budget. This is also a prime project for folks who are looking to learn how to up their sewing skills, but aren’t ready to tackle a whole project.
Where do you start?
I suggest looking at Regency gowns and fashion plates on museum websites. From the V&A to the Met and LACMA, there are plenty of places to start browsing garments of the era. This is gonna give you an idea of the silhouette, patterns and materials you’re going to need to look for. Getting familiar with the silhouette is going to be crucial.
After you feel comfortable with style of the time, figure out your budget. I spent about $20 on a dress from Ross (it’s a bargain retail place in the US), and probably about $20 on fabric and ribbon for the additions I made. Knowing your budget can help you figure out what base dress is going to work for you. A strapless dress, for instance, is probably going to need more materials and tailoring than a dress that has some straps. A shorter dress will need a lot of additional fabric, and new fabric could cost more than the base dress, depending on what you’re looking for.
